Wildlife & Nature In The Sierra Nevada

Las Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada is home to many species of Animals, Plants & Fauna. Listed below are some spectacular wildlife species which can be seen over the year on a regular basis.

Animals

Las Alpujarras & The Sierra Nevada has countless wildlife, Wild Animals and Insects can be seen around the countryside of the mountains including Boar, Ibex, badger, foxes, Snakes & Lizards. Common Insects include: Escalopandras, scorpions, Boatmen, Dragonflies, Butterflies & Processonary Caterpillars. Night time can be spent watching the bats fly in the skies and the sound of the odd Owl.

Birds

Andalucia is home to Europe's best bird life in which birds come over from Africa for the summer months. There are also a number of resident birds here. Whilst staying in Las Alpujarras you are bound to see: Bee Eaters, Griffin Vultures, Booted Eagles, Blue Rock Thrush, Short Toed Eagles, Wood Chat Shrike, Bonellis Eagle, Marsh Harriers, Black Vultures and Sardinian Warblers, just to say a few.

Plants & Fauna

Although the countryside can be rather dry 4 months of the year from June to September there are many plants that do well here and that are native to this area. Fruit trees that can be seen all around the town include Figs, Oranges, Lemons, Avocados, Apricots and Peaches, Prickly Pears, Walnuts and countless Olives which in Autumn look very impressive with there blossom. In the Spring time you can enjoy the meadow flowers like poppy's and the bloom of Aloeveras which are famous for their leaves and are used in many skin care creams. During Spring you can be greeted with the smell of Jasmine and a local plant to Las Alpujarras called "Galan De Noche as walking through the town.
